Autumn Maintenance Tips for your Home

We all love the brilliant colors of Fall in East Tennessee, but we call it FALL because those beautiful colors end up on the ground, in your gutters and generally making a huge mess.

  • Check your gutters frequently and make sure they are clean and leaf free.
  •  Keep leaves cleaned from walk ways.  When it rains they become slick and hazardous.  Shredded leaves are great for your compost pile. Be sure to get a permit (REQUIRED) if you decide to burn them.
  •  Have a system maintenance check performed by a qualified technician on your heating system. Optimum efficiency keeps money in your pocket.
  • Change all filters in your heating units and schedule to change them monthly.
  •  If you have a fireplace, have a chimney technician check the flue.  If it gas you will want to make sure there are no obstructions, if it is wood      burning you always want to make sure there is no build up of creosote.
  • Be sure to change carbon monoxide detector batteries at the same you change your smoke detector batteries. We Fall back to Standard time on Sunday November 6, 2011.  Its the best time to schedule to change those detector batteries.
  • Unhook all outdoor hoses and frost proof any outdoor faucets.
  • Check windows and doors for air leaks and caulk or apply weather-stripping.

For just a few hours work you can save thousands of dollars by preventing damage to your home and possibly avoid harmful accidents to you and your family and visitors.

After you do your maintenance, sit back with a cup of warm cider or hot chocolate in front of that cozy fire-place and enjoy!
