Severe Weather Tips – Knoxville TN

Spring is definitely right around the corner.  Star magnolia and Bradford pear trees are on the verge of exploding into blossom.  Severe weather is moving through our area today.  I have a couple of single friends who have no family here and I thought I might remind everyone, check on your elderly neighbors and single friends who live in the area and have no family before and after severe weather occurs.

We seem to be in a tornado and severe storm pattern in Knoxville and Middle and East Tennessee right now. If you have a smart phone, WBIR a local TV station has the capability of sending weather alerts to your phone.

Stay safe! NOAH weather says to move to the lowest floor of your home, preferably a basement.  Get under a work bench or sturdy piece of furniture (pool tables are great). If you have a one level home, move to an enclosed area with no windows, a closet or bathroom. Cover yourself with blankets.   Stay away from doors and windows. Also, if you are driving in heavy rain or storms, do not drive through flooded, low lying areas on roadways. Do not park under bridges or overpasses.

Do you have a disaster plan in place?  Sit down for five minutes and make one; especially if you have children and pets.  Discuss it with your family.   Establish a safe area.  Run a couple of drills.  Hopefully, you will not ever have to use it, but better safe than sorry.

Now would be a great time to get a storage container and fill it with bottled water, a flash light with new batteries,  some easy  to open canned foods,  paper goods,  a battery operated radio, extra batteries for the flash light, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and a first aid kit.  If everything is all together it’s a snap to pick it up and go; even better if it can be stored in your “safe area”.

Take care today and stay safe!

Then when the clouds clear and the sun begins to shine again; if you need help with Real Estate in the Knoxville, Loudon, Lenoir City, and Farragut area.  I am here to help. Call Shawna Turner, EXIT Realty Knoxville.

Autumn Maintenance Tips for your Home

We all love the brilliant colors of Fall in East Tennessee, but we call it FALL because those beautiful colors end up on the ground, in your gutters and generally making a huge mess.

  • Check your gutters frequently and make sure they are clean and leaf free.
  •  Keep leaves cleaned from walk ways.  When it rains they become slick and hazardous.  Shredded leaves are great for your compost pile. Be sure to get a permit (REQUIRED) if you decide to burn them.
  •  Have a system maintenance check performed by a qualified technician on your heating system. Optimum efficiency keeps money in your pocket.
  • Change all filters in your heating units and schedule to change them monthly.
  •  If you have a fireplace, have a chimney technician check the flue.  If it gas you will want to make sure there are no obstructions, if it is wood      burning you always want to make sure there is no build up of creosote.
  • Be sure to change carbon monoxide detector batteries at the same you change your smoke detector batteries. We Fall back to Standard time on Sunday November 6, 2011.  Its the best time to schedule to change those detector batteries.
  • Unhook all outdoor hoses and frost proof any outdoor faucets.
  • Check windows and doors for air leaks and caulk or apply weather-stripping.

For just a few hours work you can save thousands of dollars by preventing damage to your home and possibly avoid harmful accidents to you and your family and visitors.

After you do your maintenance, sit back with a cup of warm cider or hot chocolate in front of that cozy fire-place and enjoy!
